In January my work sent our division on a ‘rewards’ trip to Sydney, which involved the obligatory meetings and team building activities- ho-hum. However our trip concluded with a cruise on Sydney harbour and a Black Tie Dinner at Tooronga Zoo-yay!
I wanted to wear a 1950’s style cocktail dress, complete with yards of sumptuous tulle, the scrummiest floral taffeta fabric in soft mellow tones…in short I wanted a Betty Draper dress.
I initially contemplated making a dress…although I’m quite a good sewer, I don’t have the maverick seamstress skills to complete a task of this proportion. So I hit the pavement and checked out all my usual shops and found my dream embodied in this Antique Floral Taffeta Dress from Jigsaw Spring 2011.
The fabric has the most beautiful sheen to it- like the lustre of a soft golden sunset.It makes the most beautiful swooshing sound as you move and it feels divine to wear.
or as a long sweeping wrap around the shoulders, with fabric sweeping down almost to the floor-which can be quite dramatic!
It came with detached triple layer golden tulle petticoat, that is more decadent than anything I could ever find in a modern-day shop;
To finish off this beautiful dress I had to have all golden accessories;
Golden Diamonte Sling back Slippers- Mathers 2010
Silk Rose Clutch Purse-Strandbags 2010
Vintage Pearl Floral Bracelet- Avon Circa 1960’s, Earrings- Lovisa 2012
It was a nice dinner with great views of Sydney Harbour, lovely food and dancing-but unfortunately there wasn’t a single Don Draper in sight!!!!
