I bought this beautiful Mink Hat (more of a hair piece really) from the Love Vintage Fair last month. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to buy it… I have a mink collar that I wanted a little hat to go with and this was the best preserved example I had seen . Even though it wasn’t perfect, the fur was in excellent condition and the other details could be fixed with a little TLC.
Last week I found some time to sit down and give this little baby a make over. I removed all of the frayed and tattered netting and then set about prettying her up.
Apart from needing new netting, I also had to give her a re-shape and it’s pretty chocolate-brown velvet bows needed an iron. I bought some soft brown netting from Spotlight and pinned it in place.
It looks like a porcupine at this stage….after much mucking around I managed to get the netting to sit the way I wanted. Finally after a couple of attempts it looked the way I wanted and I stitched it all in place.
Judging by the style I think it is most likely a late 40’s or early 50’s piece.I decided to style in accordingly and will share some photos of me wearing soon.
Princess Pin Curls
P.S- The label states that it was made by Ilten Hats– I can’t find any information on where and when it was started but there seem to be quite a few for sale on etsy. Many of these carry a ” Union Made” label from the U.S Garment Workers Union– as seen in this post….mine didn’t.
I would love to hear from anyone who might know any more?!?
