Dear Friend,

I’m sad to say that I have found Mad Men Season 6 a bit of a let down.

The characters don’t seem to have gotten anywhere throughout the whole of 1968…apart from spiralling into all time personal lows. We didn’t see enough of Joanie, we saw Peggy have a really rough time in love, Pete losing the plot and Don descending into alcoholism. The whole season I felt like I was watching a train hurtling along a track that was about to end, knowing that there was going to be a spectacular crash and yet not being able to stop watching. Not only were our main characters struggling with their own lives we see the social fabric of their world tearing- the race riots, Robert Kennedy being shot, Nixon becoming President and the change in values and social structure.

This air of pessimism pervades throughout the whole season and doesn’t didn’t lift until the final 10 minutes. Only then did I feel that there was hope upon the horizon…hope for Peggy, for Joanie, for Sally and for Don (not Pete, he’s a cretin).

Don has spent his whole adult life running away from and hiding his upbringing and personal identity…and it is only when he finally admits who and what he is that he seems to feel free of some of these demons. The fact that he did this in front of the Hershey’s team shows that he is close to a breakdown…but, ironically, from that moment on I believed (for the first time in the whole series) that Don could be saved from himself. Maybe he could perhaps be healed of all the tortures within his soul…but at will he be strong enough to weather that storm?

In the last scene Don takes the children to see where he was raised and for the first time reveal to them who he really is.

I think he is trying to tell Sally why he is the way he is and in doing so help her understand why he has such terrible, confusing morals.

I think she begins to understand him, and to a smaller degree Bobby does too.

As they stand looking at the dilapidated Whore House we hear Joni Mitchell’s song Both Sides begin to play… I was disappointed that they didn’t play it all.  If you’re not familiar with the lyrics you should check them out- they seem to suit Don and his situation perfectly )…it talks of the love that Don has lost because of his own inability to love, of his ousting from SC & Partners and his admission that he is lost. Despite all this I think this song is hopeful because it is an admission of failure…Don has never admitted failure or being wrong before now…this may just be his turning point.

Bows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I’ve looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s cloud illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I’ve looked at love that way

But now it’s just another show
You leave ’em laughing when you go
And if you care, don’t let them know
Don’t give yourself away

I’ve looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It’s love’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say “I love you” right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I’ve looked at life that way

Oh but now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I’ve changed
Well something’s lost but something’s gained
In living every day

I’ve looked at life from both sides now
From WIN and LOSE and still somehow
It’s life’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know life at all

I’ve looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It’s life’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know life at all

It seemed so fitting that they used this song to close the season and the year of social upheaval that was 1968- the song was actually released in 1969 and I think it was a nice way to lead into the New Year….and the Season 7.

What did you think of Mad Men Season 6?

What do you want to see in Season 7 ?
