Dear Friend,

I have been somewhat of a busy little bee the last couple of weeks.

Working heaps and venturing out and about far more than usual- visiting markets and sales and generally enjoying the last of our Summer weather.

This post is a smattering of what I’ve been up to.

Last weekend the National Trust had a big clothing and haberdashery sale at Como House. I missed most of the bargains as I worked in the morning and couldn’t get there until 1 o’clock. All the savvy buyers (including Marion Boyce- costume designer for the ABC’s The Miss Fisher’s Murder Mystery show) were lining up at the dawn well before the 10am opening time.

So many of the charming staff informed me how much I would have loved all the gorgeous 50’s hats they had earlier in the day….I think they were trying to be conversational and kind, but it just depressed me!

Como House itself was looking quite bare without all it’s normal furniture- just racks and racks of clothes and tables full of odds and sods.

There were some smashing bits of memorabilia, like these girdle boxes

Sadly, they no longer contained the girdles. I was quite disapointed as I wanted to see the girdle that was “tiny but terrific” and that “walks”. All my girdles walk quite well and don’t ride up…I wonder if this was a modern thing in the 50’s.

If you are going to pop over to Como House you must pop into there cafe which is housed in the old stable buildings.

They had excellent food and the prettiest cake counter.

Cakes, slices, meringues and macaroons all sat beneath glass cloches and the whole counter 4 metre is dotted with small vases of old fashioned flowers.

I only bought two things at the sale.

This fab deadstock tourist tea towel, with marvelous pickies of London’s tourist attractions on it.

I’m contemplating using them to make a London themed circle skirt, by cutting them panels out and appliqueing them on.

I picked up a David Jones tan cord jacket for the coming winter for only $20-it’s not vintage, but it’s old enough to have character without any blemishes.

I can hear an audible GASP as I say this. I know, a tan cord jacket does not sound like my regular garb. But it really is lovely, quite fitted and has smashing buttons. I’m hoping it will go with a duck hunting skirt that I bought on etsy a few weeks back.

I am very much looking forward to my Autumn wardrobe and have decided to embrace the season whole heartedly this year, incorporating lots of reds, tan and browns. Very much inspired by Horse and Hound.

I hope you are equally enjoying the change of season…whether you are heading towardsSummer or leaving it behind.
